Let’s talk Backlinks. What are they and why are they important?
I’ll start with the why. It’s actually pretty simple… a backlink is one of the most important signals in Google’s algorithms to measure the authority of a website. The more high quality backlinks a website has, the more likely Google will be to rank that site higher than an opposing site that has a lesser backlink profile.
So what is a backlink? A backlink is a link to a page or post on your website from another 3rd party website. You can think of a backlink as a “vote” for your page or post. The more “votes” you get, the more likely that page or post is to be shown in search results to the people searching for it.
Not all backlinks are created equal, however. Backlinks from high domain authority sites have a lot more influence on your keyword rankings than backlinks from low domain authority sites.
So, how do you get more high quality backlinks?
Well, many backlinks will come organically, meaning people who stumble across your content online might find it helpful or insightful and link to it in their content or share it on social platforms for their own audience.

So how do we track the results of backlinks? There are some key metrics that will tell you how well your Paid Search Marketing strategy is performing.
Over time, a backlink strategy that is working will yield positive increases in the following metrics:
- Search Impressions: This is the amount of times people saw your content in search results.
- Clicks: This is the amount of times people clicked on your content in search results.
- Domain Authority: Based on a scale of 1-100, this metric reveals how authoritative search engines see your site. Higher domain authority sites typically rank higher in search results.
These metrics, as well as a list of the backlinks we’ve generated, will be tracked in your Lemonade Stand Measure Dashboard for you to view at any time. If you’ve been assigned an Account Manager to your account, they will be keeping track of these metrics for you and will present them to you in your monthly meetings, or whatever reporting schedule works best for you.
It’s important to keep in mind that a backlink strategy is only one piece of the puzzle. A backlink only strategy may be appropriate for some, however we typically recommend it as part of a more robust and long-term internet marketing strategy and combining it with other services such as content marketing and Local SEO.
